Artificial Retinas Restores Sight
Nelson Hernandez III

Scientists and researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have recently developed an artificial retina that could restore perfect vision to the blind. They plug it directly into the optic nerves and it stops progressive diseases which can eventually lead to blindness unless it is treated immediately. Some drugs are proven to slow the process down, but when the cells are dead, they cannot be replaced. Implants usually cannot restore the sight very well and could only detect a few colors like yellow and grey. With this new artificial retina, sight can be restored to near perfect!

Plastic Bridges Support Tanks
Nelson Hernandez III

The United States Army plans to put a new and environmentally friendly technique of bridge building in effect. As opposed to standard concrete and wood which is traditionally used to make bridges, scientists say that new plastic bridges can be used for military uses. These new bridges are mostly made out of old recycled detergent bottles and car bumpers. The older styles of bridges were expensive and took to long to manufacture. With these new plastic bridges, the military can now make them effectively without spending a ton of money. The bridges are usually used to get across rough terrain and rives that normally couldn’t be crossed. They are made of polyethylene and the plastic from the bottles. The result from mixing these chemicals is a super strong material that can withstand the weight of a seventy-three ton tank! It also requires a lot less regular maintenance which saves the government millions!

Cat in an Engine
By Phoebe Lucas

On October 7th Patrick Mills came out of the movie theatre and found a note on his car. Someone passed by the car and heard a meowing noise, and thought he should let Mills know. Mills called in firefighters to help retrieve the cat that was stuck in his engine, but they could not. A local Starbucks was kind enough to donate milk, a lady brought catfood, and Panera Bread even gave some tuna to lure the cat out of the car and the cat still refused to come out.

It became late and the cat still wouldn't budge so Mills decided to drive home and said he would put a can of tuna under the car when he got home. However, when he was pulling out of the parking lot, Patrick's girlfriend saw a tail hanging near the wheel. He imediately stopped the car, but as soon as he went to reach for it the cat retreated farther into the car. For another hour he tried to get the cat to come out with no success. Eventually he called his sister for a ride home.

The next day he called veteranarians, body shops, and more without any help. No progress made, he went to PetSmart and found a woman named Tami Baker who was a volunteer of Feline Friends of Destin, Inc. who wanted to help. Baker thought, 'If the fire brigade couldn’t do it, what am I going to do?'. But she ended up being the one to save the kitten. Shortly after Baker arrived in the parking lot she had an idea: scare the cat. Baker took a metal coat hanger and banged it inside the car and caused the cat to jump out very quickly. After two days of struggle it only took a couple minutes to rescue her.

Tami Baker is now fostering the four week old kitten until it recovers. The kitten only has a minor cold and is too skinny, but overall she will be fine. Very appropriately, Baker named the cat Lucky.
